A khutir is a type of rural locality in Ukraine which usually consists of 5-10 houses.
- The Khutir Stavky is located 5 km from the nearest village of Shevchenkovo, Konotop Raion in Ukraine. Perhaps now, there is not a single inhabitant left there. My first visit to this magnificent place took place in 2004. Essentially cut off from civilization, khutir is located among the steppes and hills on the shore of a small pond. Around the khutir there is a small river Romain, swamps and peat bogs, from which the inhabitants of the farm extract peat for heating their houses. At the time of my stay in the khutir, 2 families lived there.
In the house where I lived, there is a large yard in the middle of which is a well, in the barn opposite they keep goats and pigs, geese and chickens. Behind the yard, there is an orchard, and behind the garden is a large plot of land where the owners grow vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, pumpkin, zucchini, etc.). The owner also liked to grow tobacco, which he dried in the yard and then rolled cigarettes for himself. Food was prepared on small gas hob using gas cylinders, but the tastiest food was from the oven. People use it to cook some dishes and to heat the house.
- This project is based on one of my small watercolor drawing made en plein air. Being far from Ukraine, in dynamic and noisy Barcelona, looking at this picture, I remembered that quiet, peaceful place. Parts of the landscape that are locally flooded with separate spots well convey the impression of the real landscape of this region - calm and monochrome. This prompted me to develop this small research project, which was based on my own memories and walks on Google Maps, looking at familiar landscapes from an unusual angle for me - from above, from an angle from which I have never seen them. And I noticed that these fields, like in my picture, look like locally evenly flooded spots.
