The Sentimental Architect
Mykola Kornilov (born 1985, Sumy, Ukraine) is an architect and interdisciplinary artist based in Barcelona. He holds an MA Architecture from Kyiv National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture and Bachelor of Arts from Sumy Higher Arts and Culture College. His art and architectural practices are inseparable. He always balances between these two disciplines. If he artistic method as an artist is a constant search and self-reflection (after the start of a full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine, his art turned into a reflection of the war), then in architecture his research interests cover more extensive fields: (a) Memory (any memory, personal, historical memory, memory of a place, etc); (b) Imperfection (vernacular and "imperfect" architecture and design, that include both traditional and modern forms); (c) Landscape and its transformation (urban, nature landscape, etc).
Besides what you see on the website, the artist had other art periods, which are important and interesting.
(1) "Sumy Period" which took place approximately between 2001 and 2007. During his studies at the Sumy Art and Culture College, where he studied from 2001 to 2005 and several years after graduation (2005-2007), Kornilov made a large number of drawings, paintings and illustrations. Ukrainian traditional decorative art and naïve (with its own anterpretations and adaptation of modern theme) had a significant influence on the formation of the first artistic period of the young artist.

(2) "Arch Period" which took place approximately between 2008 and 2020. During his studies at the NAOMA, from 2007 to 2013 and several years after graduation (2013-2020), Kornilov made a large number of drawings and paintings under the strong influence of architectural education.
